Next time you raise a glass, do so with a word of thanks to the memory of Fred Morrison. Credited with inventing the Frisbee (Pluto Platter), Fred died today at his home in Utah of lung cancer. He was 90.

From his obituary: "...After serving as a fighter-bomber pilot during World War II and enduring 48 days as a POW in a German stalag, Mr. Morrison went to work as a carpenter. But he never lost sight of his flying-cake-pan entrepreneurial dreams.

In the 1950s, he designed an aerodynamic disc made of plastic. The nation was then caught up in UFO fever; Mr. Morrison called his invention the Pluto Platter and marketed it at fairs in California by dressing up as an astronaut. Hula Hoop manufacturer Wham-O Mfg. took notice of the Pluto Platter's brisk sales and bought the rights in 1957, renaming it "Frisbee" when an executive noticed Ivy Leaguers' penchant for tossing around pie pans from the Frisbie Pie Co

RIP, Fred. The world's been a lot more fun thanks to you.

Is anyone interested in attending this even Saturday in Blacksburg/Christinasburg. I have played this course about 5 times and it is a beast of a course. Always a great challenge in the dense woods of Southwest Va. I know it is last minute but maybe we can get 4 people who want to go, I'm game.
See below:

Yank it Right
02-07-2009
*The times shown may change, depending on DST settings
Event Location: Golden Hills DGC
Blue Ridge Area Winter League V

The Piedmont Disc Golf Club is proud to announce BRAWL V! The league will consist of eight, one-day disc golf tournaments that run on Saturdays from December 13, 2008 through February 28, 2009. BRAWL V will showcase the courses of western Virginia including Walnut Creek Park in Charlottesville, Elk Creek in Appomattox, Peaks View Park in Lynchburg, Falling Creek Park in Bedford, Sontag in Rocky Mount, Golden Hills in Christiansburg, Big Branch and Timber Ridge, which are private, temporary courses near Bedford. The awards ceremony will be held after completion of the final tournament at Timber Ridge.

Each tournament is two rounds. Registration is from 8-9am, followed by a players' meeting, and tee off at 9:30.

*

Open—$20, Ladies, Ams, Juniors—$10.
*

PDGA-eligible Ams (never cashed) may play Open for $15.
*

There will be a $10 bonus for the low Grandmaster (50+) in the Open division.
*

Field will be limited to 72 players.
*

Please pack your lunch—the second round will start only 30 minutes after the last scorecard is in!

BRAWL V is a points series with a simple format. Four divisions will be offered (Open, Ladies, Am and Jr). We will follow the ODDS format of points. A player receives one point for entering, one point for each person beaten within your division and bonus points for the top 5 finishers (7-1st, 4-2nd, 3-3rd-2-4th,1-5th.) Only a player's best six finishes may be used in the final results.

Innova is sponsoring the BRAWL this year and we will have BRAWL-stamped discs available! Amateur prizes will be vouchers which may be used to purchase from the BRAWL store. Payout will be 40% of each division.

A portion of the entry fee at each one-day tournament will be withheld from each division. This money goes toward a perpetual trophy for the overall Open, Junior, Ladies and Am division winners, free membership into the Piedmont Disc Golf Club or Blue Ridge Disc Golf Club for the top four Ams and a ‘Skins Match’ for the top four Open point leaders to be held at the awards ceremony. A $2 Ace Pool will be offered with every unclaimed prize going towards final payout. The overall Am champion will win an Innova basket again this year!
